Freighter World Cruises is offering a cruise from Portugal through the Azores to St. John's, Newfoundland from June 1-14, 2009 with Travel Dynamics International, a leading operator of small-ship educational enrichment cruises that was founded in 1969. During this unique voyage on the Clelia II, passengers will explore the Azores' five most important islands, and will have the time to conduct their exploration leisurely, to admire the islands' beautiful nature settings, and meet the friendly local inhabitants.

While the mega-liners are locked into a set schedule, Travel Dynamics International's ships enjoy the luxury of spontaneity. If a beautiful little cove comes into view, the captain may drop anchor so you could swim or snorkel from the marina at the stern of the yacht. If the chefs spot a secluded beach, they may be inspired to prepare a picnic lunch to be served on shore. This leisurely approach to travel extends to the destinations as well. At every site visited, you'll have plenty of time to listen to the presentations by expert onboard lecturers and guides and then strike out for some in-depth investigation of your own. Furthermore, the Clelia II tends to stay in port late. This gives you an opportunity to take a walk around the town after dinner, or to linger over coffee in a cafe on the town square. You have the freedom to exercise your options, and the leisure to savor each destination at your own pace. Contact Joycene for a brochure with a detailed itinerary and to book. No age limit.

The program includes: 12-night cruise aboard the all-suite, 100-guest Clelia II ; Welcome and farewell cocktail receptions aboard ship; All meals aboard ship, including house wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner · Open bar aboard ship throughout the cruise; Complete program of tours and excursions; Educational program of lectures and discussions by accompanying guest lecturers; Professional Travel Dynamics International tour staff; Complete pre-departure materials; Baggage handling and transfers abroad on the designated program departure and arrival dates; Port and embarkation taxes; Gratuities to porters, guides and drivers.

Day 1: Fly from the U.S. to Lisbon, Portugal.

Day 2: Arrive in Lisbon and transfer to Clelia II. Overnight in port aboard ship.

Day 3: The historic city of Lisbon stretches gently over seven hills bordering the Atlantic. During the age of discovery most of Europe's great expeditions to the New World, Africa and the Far East left from the very port where we embarked on Clelia II. It was here in Lisbon that the extravagant Manueline style emerged-an architecture blending influences from the newly discovered lands with Gothic and Renaissance flourishes. Our tour includes two Manueline monuments, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Belem Tower, a fanciful white tour de force built to protect the city's harbor, and the Jeronimos Monastery. Continue to the medieval Alfama quarter, where ancient houses and Romanesque churches climb the narrow streets that lead to the Medieval Castle of Sao Jorge and a magnificent vista. This afternoon visit the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, one of Europe's finest art museums. Alternatively, enjoy a full-day excursion to the Monastery of Batalha, a blend of Gothic and Manueline architecture, and the 12th-century Cistercian Monastery of Alcobaca. Those interested in wine and cuisine will take a day-long excursion to Casa Cadaval, a four-century-old vineyard and winery known for its fine Herdade de Muge. Enjoy an exclusive wine tasting hosted by the Cadaval family. Overnight aboard ship.

Days 4 & 5: At sea. Make the most of the ship's amenities and enjoy lectures and wine tastings by our onboard experts as Clelia II ventures toward the Azores.

Day 6: Santa Maria, the Azores, is the archipelago's southernmost island, the first to be discovered by Diogo de Silves in 1427. As was true of the rest of the archipelago, there were no humans living on the 5 million-year-old island. Known today as the "Yellow Island" because of its vast wheat crops, dark ochre earth and golden beaches, it is home to 5,000 people. Swim in Maya Bay with its cliffside vineyards and be one of the few outside of Christopher Columbus to wander the village of Anjos, which was the explorer's first landfall upon his return from America. Note the distinct oversized chimneys of the whitewashed houses. Take a drive to Cruz Teixeira and savor local specialties during a cooking demonstration and lunch at charming Restaurante O Fontes, hosted by the Fontes family.

Day 7: Sao Miguel, the largest and most populated of the Azores, was two islands before a volcanic eruption joined them. Nicknamed the "Green Island" for its lowland meadows and forested hills, it also boats clear lakes, sandy beaches and high mountains. Wander the historic streets of the lively city of Ponta Delgada before driving west to discover breathtaking Sete Cidades, where two lakes-one blue and one green-fill the center of a large volcanic crater. According to legend, when a princess and young shepherd had to part, they both cried tears the color of their eyes. Alternatively, visit the harborfront culinary school at Sao Pedro Hotel Ponta Delgada, and continue to the quaint town of Furnas, where the "caldeiras," or thermal springs provide a natural kitchen. Enjoy a lunch of traditional Portuguese dishes steamed in the geysers alongside Furnas Lake at Terra Nostra Restaurant. On the return trip to Ponta Delgada, stop at one of the island's 6,000 pineapple hot houses for a sampling of the distinctive local fruit.

Day 8: Most of Terceira is ringed by coastal cliffs, except on the south coast where a volcanic tuff cone creates a beautiful harbor Explore Angra do Heroismo, the Azores' oldest city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the colorful houses and chapels, witness the tourada corda, a daily event held from May to September where a bull is tied to a rope and let loose in the streets.

Day 9: Pico, the second largest island in the archipelago, is dominated by its imposing volcano, which rises to 7,713 feet, making it the highest point in all of Portugal. Lunar landscapes contrast with areas of luxurious vegetation. Vines grown on lava terrain produce verdelho wine, which has been a specialty of Pico for over 200 years. From Madalena, the island's main harbor town, we explore Pico, including the seaside villages of Cachorro, built on lava terrain; Sao Roque, which grew prosperous when it was a whaling center; Lajes, the island's first settlement; and Sao Mateus, set in striking countryside. From Pico, sail to Faial, the "Blue Island"-so named for its blue houses and plethora of hydrangeas. For centuries Horta, the island's only city, has been an important stopover for transatlantic voyagers, whether in ships, planes or submarines. Follow the open coast while driving toward Ponta dos Capelinhos, the active volcano that in 1957 transformed the landscape, burying fields and houses.

Day 10: Before crossing the Atlantic Ocean, stop in Flores, the westernmost point of both the Azores and Europe. Flores boasts a landscape varied with valleys and volcanoes, hot springs and hydrangeas. Among the island's treasures are the Waterfall of Ribeira Grande, many of whose smaller waterfalls run into the ocean; the Fundalake, one of seven lakes in the center of the island that were once volcanic craters; and a number of picturesque villages, some of which date from the 15th century.

Days 11, 12 & 13: At sea. Relax onboard as the ship crosses the Atlantic Ocean toward Newfoundland.

Day 14: St. Johns, Newfoundland. Disembark and transfer to the airport for return flights to the U.S.

Viking River Cruises is partnering with Freighter World Cruises on the March 21, 2009 sailing of the Viking Spirit, which will visit two of Belgium's most beautifully preserved medieval cities in a 10-day spring vacation in the Low Countries, including eight guided tours.

Viking ships are Scandinavian in design, with open, airy interiors by famed maritime architects Yran & Storbraaten. Every stateroom has an "outside" river view with a sitting area near the window or balcony for viewing, and on every ship, most windows open to the fresh air. Enjoy the comfort of hotel-style beds with European comforters and duvets, and satellite television with CNN and other programming. Program Directors provide background, context and a regional perspective. Demonstrations, lectures and workshops supplement your on-shore exploration. Your fare covers meals, shore excursions, lectures and cultural performances; it also covers hotel accommodations during city portions of "cruisetour" itineraries.
