Polish Steamship Company (PZM) offers a popular tramp itinerary from the Great Lakes. Destinations are not known in advance but can be Morocco, Spain, Norway, Russia, the Netherlands, or another port, then to the Port of Ijmuiden (Amsterdam) before returning to the Great Lakes. The duration for the roundtrip is approximately 60 days. If passengers have enough flexibility to wait in Europe for a sailing to become available, they may do a 12-16 day transatlantic crossing from Ijmuiden to the Great Lakes. Passengers book for first or second half of the desired month but the actual sailing date may fall outside of that time period. The date of departure will be announced 1 to 2 weeks (sometimes less) prior to departure. The vessels offload steel in Cleveland and or Burns Harbor, where passengers usually disembark/embark, and then call a number of ports in the Great Lakes to load grain. The five vessels, the Irma, Iryda, Isa, Isadora, and Isolda are all bulk carriers, 34,600 tons, 656-foot in length, and were built in Japan in 1999-2000. The officers and crew are Polish and the food is Polish. The ships each offer accommodations for up to six passengers in an Owners Cabin, a double cabin and two single cabins, all outside. The Owners Cabin has a single bed and pullman sofa-bed, a large desk, plenty of storage, mini-refrigerator and two portholes to the port side. It is on the Bridge Deck, 9 decks above the water line, and can therefore be rocky in rough weather. The standard double cabin is on the Main Deck (4 decks below the Bridge) and has a sofa, upper and lower berths and 2 portholes on the port side. The two single cabins are on the Main Deck and Poop Deck (4 and 3 decks below the Bridge) with a single bed and sofa. All cabins have private facilities and are equipped with a radio. A large airy mess is available to the passengers, plus a lounge/TV room, and a small gym with a ping-pong table. Although passengers are allowed the run of the ship, and are allowed on the bridge, it is worth remembering that these are working ships. The five 656-foot "I" Class ships in the PZM fleet are mainly used for passenger service, but can occasionally be supplemented by six 26,000-ton 600-foot "Z" Class ships built in Argentina in the 1980s, which can accommodate three or four passengers each at the same fares. |
