The operating fleet uses ships of four types -- from large, brand-new ships with luxurious open public areas to one small, more intimate traditional ship. Because one ship leaves each day northbound from Bergen, and one leaves each day southbound from Kirkenes, eleven ships are in use at any one time. The fare depends upon the type of cabin and the time of year for travel and whether you book the sailing only or one of the eight air/sea packages now offered. Spitsbergen, the largest island of the Svalbard Archipelago, is located only 600 miles from the North Pole. In this land of the Midnight Sun, with two-thirds of the area covered with ice, the sun never sets from April to August. Average temperature is about 41 degrees Fahrenheit. More than 170 species of plants and more than 100 types of migratory birds flourish in this Arctic landscape. About 60% of the archipelago has been designated as national parks, nature reserves or bird or plant sanctuaries to preserve this pristine environment. Among the wildlife you'll find wild reindeer, seals, walruses, and Arctic foxes. Approximately 4,500 polar bears inhabit Spitsbergen. When you board
a Hurtigurten ship you are embarking on a journey with over
100 years of history. Hurtigruten cruises the coast of Norway
on vessels that maneuver through the towns, villages and fjords
of Norway's spectacular coast. One of 12 ships departs daily
from the scenic city of Bergen on a 12-day round trip voyage
to Kirkenes, above the Arctic Circle and at Norway's northernmost
border, and back to Bergen, calling 34 ports en route. Fares
start at $2,299 per person, double occupancy. Passengers may
also wish to travel one-way and can choose either the 7-day northbound
voyage from Bergen to Kirkenes (starting at $1,599 per person,
double occupancy), or the 6-day southward journey from Kirkenes
to Bergen (starting at $1,399 per person, double occupancy).
Since the first ship set sail on this route in 1893 the main
purpose of this route has been carrying people and cargo between
the ports of Northern Norway.
